How it works

Multiply the mob size by the average daily water consumption per head for the relevant class of stock. The per-head figures reflect average needs under moderate Australian conditions (15–25°C, mixed pasture and dry feed). In summer heat or when grazing dry feed, requirements increase significantly. Storage should cover at least 2–3 days as a buffer against pump or bore failure.

Worked example

200 adult cattle × 70 L/head/day = 14,000 L/day. For a 3-day storage buffer: 14,000 × 3 = 42,000 L (42 kL). A pair of 25,000 L poly tanks provides adequate buffer with redundancy.

Assumptions & limitations

Per-head daily water requirements used: adult cattle 70 L, weaner cattle 35 L, adult sheep 8 L, lambs 3 L, adult goats 10 L, horses 55 L. These are temperate-condition averages. In extreme heat (>35°C) or when stock are on dry, dusty feed, increase the estimate by 50–100%. Lactating cows need up to 30% more than the adult average. Frequently asked questions

How does temperature affect livestock water requirements?

Water intake rises sharply with heat. Cattle can double their daily intake above 35°C compared to mild weather. For summer planning in hot climates or during heat events, apply a 1.5–2× multiplier to the daily requirement before sizing tanks and pumps.

How do I size a water storage tank from this result?

Multiply the daily requirement by the number of days' buffer you want (2–3 days is a common minimum; 5–7 days for remote locations with unreliable power). For 14,000 L/day with a 3-day buffer: 42,000 L of storage — two 25,000 L tanks gives this with a small safety margin.

How many troughs do I need in a paddock?

Allow one trough per 50–100 adult cattle or per 200–500 sheep, depending on trough capacity. Always install at least two troughs per paddock — a single point of failure can cause significant stock loss in hot weather.

What about lactating or pregnant stock?

Lactating cows need up to 30% more water than dry cows. Heavily pregnant ewes in summer may need double the standard adult figure. Add a manual buffer when managing these classes, or select the next larger category and adjust.
